I bought the expander when the price dropped from $169 to $129. I've had this device about 3 months now, and the only problem I've had was with getting Tivo to recognize the device initially. Since then, it has been smooth sailing without the worry of deleted shows. The expander is intended to be stored upright and has an amber light on the front. It's pretty quiet, but like the Tivo itself is audible in a quite room and runs 24/7. Also, it is intended to be permanently connected, as shows span the internal and external drive (or so the manual says). You can of course temporarily disconnect it to move things around, power down, etc., but permanently doing so can result in lost shows.

Connection was simple, but I couldn't get Tivo to recognize it at first. The manual said to follow the on-screen directions after Tivo was restarted, but there weren't any, and as far as I could tell Tivo didn't know about the drive. After reconnecting, several reboots (Tivo takes forever to restart! We're talking 15-20 minutes!), and a couple of Tivo crashes, the device was recognized. I don't know if the problem was due to Tivo or the expander, but I'm guessing it was a Tivo software issue (some reviewers have taken issue with the eSATA cable though).

Now that it's working and functioning as intended I'm happy enough.

I tried serveral other external drives to accomplish expanding my TiVo HD unit and it wouldn't recognize them. So I bit the bullet and I have to say, this worked flawlessly. I bought the Terabyte version and it provides me with massive storage without seeing any difference over the internal drive the TiVo came with. The drive is silent and you really have no ide it is even there. he connection is through the included E-Sata cable and you really can't hook it up the wrong way. Keep in mind that a Sata cable and E-Sata cable are two different things so if you even need a replacement, buy the correct one. To get the TiVo unit to recognize the unit took a couple of restarts of the TiVo unit (A long drawn out process of Sunrise Screens and "Almost Done" waiting) but it did finally connect to the hard drive and format it to meet TiVo's needs. If space is an issue, drop the C Note and pick it up. It takes all the hassle out of things dropping off your TiVo that you might want to keep.

I bought this one month ago and installed it in just a few minutes with my Scientific Atlanta 8300HD. The important thing to do before installation is to remove power to the DVR. Connect all the cables for the MY DVR Expander and power it on. Then apply power again to the DVR and it should recognize it immediately. Note that it will take some time to format the disk, and in my case I had to do the power on/off again after the formatting to ensure the DVR recognized the disk after formatting.

The WD My DVR Expander works as expected with no problems so far.

Another thing to note, however, is that if power is removed from the system (power outage, manual removal or power) and the DVR boots up before the My DVR Expander disk is fully ready, then the DVR may not recognize the disk. It is good to remember to check your setup after every power failure to ensure your recordings are being saved as expected. This is not anything related to the WD disk, but would apply to all external disks.

easy to hook up, but you do have to go the the settings menu and do a few more authrizations steps to make active which printed instructs do not help you with. Other than that its great and added over 156 HD hours recording to my HD tivo
