We have been faithful users of turbo tax for years. For 2008 taxes, we filed our federal return in February via turbo tax (paying the outrageous fees through refund deduction). Turbo tax state (CA) said we owed $24 so we decided to wait until April to file state (heck, CA made us wait for our refunds so they can wait for my tax money).

Anyway, April 15th came around and my wife went back online to turbo taxes website to file our state return. Turbo tax wanted another $50 to file the state return (We had already paid the same amount for the Federal return). Naturally, we thought "I dont think so" so my wife went to the franchise tax boards website and used their CALfile program.

She went through every single question they asked based on the federal return we filed and ended up getting a refund of $424! Thinking she made a mistake, She gave me a copy of the 2008 federal return and I re-did the CALfile (She did not help me at all). Sure enough, I came out with the same refund amount. She did the CALfile one last time over again before she submitted it to make sure she was getting the same amount and did.

We also went back and looked at the federal return - everything was done correctly (we contacted the IRS and we were told that we did our 2008 federal return correctly and they found no errors on the return. We also went back to see if we made a mistake with the state return on turbo tax (even though all information was transferred directly from the federal return into the state return. All you pretty much do with the state return after that is answer a bunch of yes or no questions)- we couldn't find any mistakes.

We went from Turbo tax saying we owed the state of california $24 to getting $424 back using the state of california franchise tax boards program (which was totally free - we didn't have to pay one dime for any filing fees or use of their program).

Needless to say, we will not be using Turbo tax anymore. I feel as though we are being ripped off - there fees seem to sky rocket every year (I am going to go back and look at previous years returns - maybe we had more money coming back than turbo tax said). I wonder how you go from owing according to Turbo tax to getting money back according to the franchise tax board - Hmmmmmmm.....According to turbo tax, they are suppose to get you the maximum refund amount.

The only thing we could think of that could have possibly happened is maybe the federal information did not transfer to their correct places within the turbo tax state return???? I am curious if anyone else has had this same problem.

I will be posting this same review under the new 2009 program.

The purchasig experience on Amazon.com for TurboTax 2008 was great. The process was very user friendly, the product was delivered when promised, and was in excellent condition (still in the factory sealed package).
I look forward to additional software purchases in the future.
    Thank You.

I paid $39.90 to file my two state returns online. The California return would not file. The program asked a plethora of additional questions that I answered. I pressed the final file button. The program then stated that some aspect of my California return precluded online filing. I checked a few days later. None of my returns had been filed electronically. I emailed Intuit explaining that, absent a quick fix, I wanted my money back. After a few days they responded with several suggestions, none of which remotely constituted a quick fix. As I was running up against the filing deadline I responded that I was filing by paper, that their program simply did not work as advertised, and that I was renewing my request for a refund. They simply ignored me.
Not only are they crooks, but they are also stupid. I shall never use any product from this company again. They would shortly have received yet another 70-80 dollars for TurboTax2009. The marginal cost to them to supply it would probably have been about fifty cents. They essentially traded $80 for the $40 they stole from me recently. An extraordinary business plan.

Unlike other Turbo Tax years, the 2008 version was relatively big free, and came with the added benefit of free electronic filing --- although that feature may have been added only after regular subscribers complained that the online subscribers were getting added perks not available to Turbo Tax "veterans." The main problem with this software is that even when one "subscribes" --- presumably to avoid shipping expenses --- the price keeps going up. Every year, it gets more and more expensive. Still, overall Turbo Tax beats having to hire an accountant. And it's fairly simple to use and fairly complete.

I used TurboTax in 2007 to do my 2006 return. The program didn't find an error that led to me under-reporting state taxes (it only carried my wife's income over to the state form, not combined income). Since the state didn't catch the error until 2009, they're charging me over $350 in interest (in addition to over $2,800 in owed back taxes).

I contacted Intuit because they have an "accuracy guaranty," which is supposed to refund interest or penalties if the software made a mistake. They said it was my fault for not filling in a box. My contention is that the software should have been able to check the total income on the state form against the federal form and notice a discrepency. Or it should have flagged a box as having missing input. Needless to say, Intuit is refusing to pay.

The funny thing is that if Intuit paid on the accuracy guaranty, they would have made their money back after a few years of my buying their software. Instead, I won't be using this product ever again and I will let everyone who will listen know what I think about this software, this company, and their policies.
