I am a BIG fan of the Socom series...except this one. The very first mistake that they did was make it an On-line ONLY based game. The game is great in terms of graphics. The sound is amazing. The movement is suprisingly fast, depending on your connection, but mine is pretty fast.
What makes this game frustrating is that lack of intelligence of those that are playing. Don't play this game around kids and don't have the blue tooth on. You'll hear all the cursing and downright raunchy comments made by the guys playing the game. If you are a novice, like I am, forget it. I've been "Voted Out" by the other players maybe because I wasn't fast enough, or had enough kills and even learning how the game is. I'm just learning the game. But, to tell the truth, I don't know if I want to learn the game as much now. Because the levels are just not that interesting. I like the other games which you had missions to do and you had to converse with your team where to go and what to do. They did it. Maybe not right all the time, but you didn't see a whole team running about with no coordination. Everyone seems to just be going where they please.
This game IS a great idea though. Connecting players everywhere to play a game. I just think there are parameters that should be built in the game. Lose the communication. Useless. I've heard nonsense. One guy was singing a song. Another bragging that he was high and needed to get more booze so he can get really drunk. I don't want to hear that. So, what I found myself doing was leaving the BlueTooth on, and just setting it on the counter so I wouldn't hear all the nonsense. I turned off the ear piece one time and you can here their stupid comments through the speakers with the rest of the game and my kid was in the room!!
One thing that I wish that this game had was a level of skill where you can join a game on your skill level. For example, when you connect to a game, it would automatically put you in a game where all players that are of lower rank would play. If you were a high rank, it would keep you out, because obviously, you don't belong. Then as you increase your skills, you graduate to another level where you are teamed with guys on that level, and so on. That would be much better I think. Because it seems like no matter what skill level you are, you'll be in the mix with guys that play the game together and will actually KILL YOU if you are not up to their standards.
So, I don't really recommend this game at all. I'm sorry that I purchased it.

I was maybe able to play this game for 5 minutes; I wish it wasn't playstation network only. if they would have included a story/campaign mode for single player would be great.
The online meet up room interface is horrible.

Looked forward to getting this game, and found out, there was no game. The only thing is that you are connected to the internet, choose up sides, and kill each other, with somewhat varying landscapes. A real loser and waste of money. Gamespot basically put no worth in it, not even giving me the cost of the bluetooth headset. What a rip! I wanted to rate this no stars, because it did not deserve even one star.

So, I've owned SOCOM Confrontation since "day 1". I pre-ordered it with the headset, played the beta, and received it in the mail within the first few days of launch. When the game launched, it was nearly unplayable. It was awful and didn't work well at all. Considering this game is ONLINE ONLY (stop reading here if you're looking for a single player experience!) the networked gameplay needs to be very solid.
I was a big SOCOM fan in the PS2 days, so I kept playing, though not every day, in hopes that the game would improve. Finally, a little under a year later, we have (more or less) the game we were promised.
This is not quite the same as the original PS2-era SOCOM games, since it was made by another developer. (Zipper made the originals; Slant Six makes Confrontation) Still, the game is a quality affair, most definitely. There are two factions in this game, each of which can be customized to your liking. You can choose different clothing, different camouflage patterns, and different weight/armor levels. Heavier means you might take a few more shots, but lighter will allow you to sprint to key locations on maps that little bit faster, which could make the difference. The weapons you bring into battle also affect your weight/speed balance, so choose wisely for your play style. The two factions have different weapon selections at their disposal, which may also afford different play style opportunities.
There is no shortage of guns in this iteration of the SOCOM franchise. You will find a healthy supply of rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, light machine guns, sniper rifles, and pistols in this game, as well as a good slew of secondary items (grenades of different varieties, claymores, RPGs, etc.) to really fine tune your play style well.
The game controls well, and motion controls may be disabled at any time if you prefer, or can be used by holding an activation button (much like push-to-talk chat systems) to enable the motion sensor. I modified the sensitivity and was able to find a sweet spot to use for myself.
The gameplay is good, but can be unforgiving at times. It doesn't take much to be shot down--this is a much more realistic game than many others, so your health does not regenerate, and you really need to use proper tactics to ensure your own survival. If you get into a clan, you'll have some great teamwork potential as well. Since the game includes a bluetooth headset, there's not much excuse for not being able to communicate with your team, but more on that later. The different game modes work well, though there is nothing that really stands out from the rest of the online shooters out there.
Perhaps most important to this game is communication. That's made much easier by the fact that most players opted to buy the bundle with a bluetooth headset. This headset is of great quality, featuring a mute button which allows the classic "baby crying" and "Mom! Meatloaf! Now!" moments to be minimized. One of the biggest flaws with online gaming on the PS3 (in my experience) is lack of communication, and since the majority of players seem to have purchased the bundle, it's quite a positive leap for PSN gaming.
In conclusion, the patches since the game's launch have really improved the gameplay, offering better controls, better networking/game matching, and overall a better experience. Voice communication is better in this game than any other PS3 game online, and customization allows for a wide variety of play styles to bring online. And for those deciding between the game alone, and the bundle, keep in mind that the headset launched at $50 and the bundle at $60, whereas the game alone launched at $40. If you consider the value of the bundle, you'll see the clear advantage. This bluetooth headset is better than the other 4 I've used (I do all the electronics shopping for my family, so the only quality sets I haven't used are the Aliph Jawbones--if you have one of those the choice is yours to make) There is also a downloadable version of this game on PSN, allowing for gameplay without a disc, which might be nice for some out there as well.
P.S.-The next patch is said to offer free DLC to the SOCOM community, though I don't know the details of it.
