This version of Risk is dumbed-down when compared to Risk and Risk II from the '90's, that is true. There's not much in the way of options.
However, as a faithful version of the board game it is good enough. The graphics and presentation are quite nice. The real upshot is that it runs on Vista and runs without the CD which works well for my lap top. (Risk II does this as well, but it is a little more complicated to run it on Vista.)
If you are looking for a fun time-waster on a flight, pick this up. If you are playing Risk on a desktop PC, I'd say pick up the older, more robust versions.

This game is much quicker than the traditional board game of Risk. It is fun because you can play with other people, play against numerous computer opponents, or both. Would definitely recommend this game to all Risk fans.

It plays just like classic Risk with no variations or options but it looks and plays well. The big fault in it is that it only stores one game at a time. There is no save and load screen. You either continue the last played game or start a new one which pretty much ruined it for me. I bought the game so that I could have multiple games with different people going at the same time, played in short sessions over multiple days, offline. Wasted my money.

This is a fun and easy to use game, I would recommend it for 8+. You may chose to play easy or hard Generals. Graphics aren't great, but the are fine for this type of game.

Nice implementation in some ways. The graphics are reasonably clear, and the gameplay is nice and quick. But there are too few options. Cards are always traded in ascending values of reinforcements- the first player gets 4, the next 6 and so on. After a while you get huge armies suddenly appearing on the board. Ruins the game in my view. There is NO option to change this - in the board game you can play for set values of reinforcements, so armies are smaller and strategy must be more carefully thought out.
Hasbro had a better (if buggy) implementation called RiskII, much better from a tactical point of view, with way more options.
