One of my favorite PC games. Very good gameplay, very good graphics (though that isn't a real issue with me), and many different ways to play it out. I love how many choices you have in how your character's life plays out. I personally like to get my own kingdom and wipe everyone else out. I usually join Swadia and take my lands when it refuses to give me one I ask for. It gets repetitive if you play it too long, but it should give you a good three, three and-a-half months of play, and its pretty cheap. After a few months it will be good again.

Mount and blade is one of the first indie games I have ever played and I normally steer clear of no-name developers, but in this case I couldn't have been more wrong. While the game itself won't stack up graphically to a full on developer or new age game, It more than makes up for it in game play. The horseback combat is in depth and completely original, the battles capture the chaos and intensity of war before guns. Even the long range archery is done right, the only thing I don't like is when you shoot someone the arrow stays right where you hit them (awesome in itself) but say you manage to score a head shot, or lung/neck its hard to believe the wounded receive no set back, and will continue to charge as if unscathed.
Now for the best part of this game, the developers have allowed for the community to openly mod, and develop the game into what they want. The new mod's can then be downloaded and come with easy to understand instruction to be able to load the mod into the game. This leads for an unlimited amount of improvement in the game to fix any problems you might have. Overall this game has amazing support and nearly unlimited game play potential.

I bought this game because I was sick of all my other games but didn't want to spend a lot on a new game. I came across Mount & Blade and it sounded somewhat intersting. I read a lot of reviews and it seemed to sound like a good game if you like sandbox games in which you can do anything (I do). I picked up the game and have not stopped playing it in two weeks. It is probably one of the most addicting games I have ever played. Sure the graphics aren't as great as you'd expect in a game this new, but then again, I'm playing it for the game, not the graphics. It reminds me a lot of Ultima Online (minus the interaction with real people) from the late 90s. I could spend hours playing that game developing my character, and this is the same.

The battle system is pretty good and it has varying levels of difficulty that you can customize. Sometimes it gets pretty annoying when you think you should have a kill but you totally miss your opponent. The game can also get a little repetitive at times, but it has enough options where if you start getting bored you can choose direction. The NPC interaction is pretty good, although it has some glitches. I am really looking forward to the multiplayer addition that is supposed to be coming in early 2010. I would recommend this game for anyone who likes games where you can do what you want and not have to stick to a story.

When I first bought this game it was because I was running a low grade laptop I bought specifically to use as a throw away model just to get me through my Iraq deployment. I got a little bored with watching the same DVDs over and over when I had downtime so I purchased this game since it was relatively cheap. As it turns out this is probably one of the most fun single player computer games I have ever played. I was immediately enveloped with the game progression. Trying to kill off enough bandits and run enough errands for the nobles to get conscripted into their army so that I could make my self known and get my own plot of land and build my own army. It was quite an engrossing experience...unfortunately the only bad thing is you have to connect to the internet in order to register the game to keep playing. Other than that I enjoyed this game up until the moment that my hard drive died and the crappy old laptop had to get retired from service.

Mount and Blade is not for everybody. Many will find the graphics to be disappointing and the gameplay lacking in depth. There a lot of fun to be had for those that enjoy the freedom of choosing your own path through a game and the medieval era. The pros for this game include:

    - Great FPS medieval fighting in open field engagements, both on foot and horseback. Sieges are fun too but lack realism.

    - Good variety of troops and equipment.

    - Character development is nicely refined and there are many ways to be successful; this is not a min/max game where there are only a few optimal paths that work well and any deviation will make life unbearable down the road.

    - Game progression is well done. You start out as a solo fighter (quite a challenge at times), then move on to leading a larger and large group of cohorts. Some of these cohorts will be NPCs that you can equip and develop stat-wise, but most are simply hired AI help. Eventually you may be able to command 200 or more in your group.

    - Although the graphics may not be spectacular, the performance of the game, even in large battles, is pretty good. I've noticed a slight stutter when reinforcements arrive; this can be annoying, but is not terrible.

    - Siege battles, although not totally realistic, can be a lot of fun and very satisfying when won.

    Cons include:

    - Difficulty. From the start you almost have to set the settings to easiest on everything, and even then you can be faced with near-impossible to win situations in the beginning of the game. Later you can ratchet up the difficulty as you develop your character and will rarely or never be faced with impossible to win situations.

    - Somewhat jumbled and convoluted map design, with names of cities and towns that look as though they were generated with a random name generator. More thought should have gone into the map layout.

    - Task/Questing and Lord/Royal personalities way too generic. Expanding this area would bring more depth to the game, as it is, events, tasks, and personalities seem to be completely random/generic.

    - In the later stages of the game, town/city/castle management is tedious. If you are successful, you will eventually have several fiefs to develop and collect taxes from. You will be able to garrison troops in castles. What you can't do is recall remote troop to meet you at a specified location or send someone to collect your taxes and bring it to you. In short, there is no delegation at all, you must do everthing yourself.

    - Sieges are a bit ridiculous. In M&B you sometimes have to build a siege tower and other times you build a ladder to siege a castle or city. The siege tower is probably a little more realistic of the two, but both are flawed. A siege tower must be pushed up to the wall, Okay. But while this is happening, the majority of your troops just stand around being shot at. For the ladder assault, you get a grand total of one ladder that is prepositioned on a semi-broken wall, weird. In both cases this single path assault can be extremely frustrating as the ladder/tower becomes a huge choke point. There are no other siege weapons or options.

    - Cavalry units maybe a bit too powerful and cav vs cav battles can be absurd and tediuous to finish.

Overall, there is a lot to like about this game and if you enjoy the open sandbox style of play, there is a lot of time to invest and enjoy here. There are many mods available, though I have not tried any of them. The developer appears to be continuing to work on this version of the game and I would not be surprised to see an even better and well funded sequel to this game come out in the future. There is no question that the game is worth paying $15-20 for.
