Everything runs faster with Windows 7--right?...Wrong...If anything, start-up and overall functionality was faster last week for me with Vista.
The biggest difference for me between Vista and Windows 7 is actually a negative one: if you have a widescreen monitor like I do, Windows 7 scales up all applications--even if it has to stretch the images/fonts and saddle you with a blurry display (all except Microsoft products, which look fine at the 150% display); and if you lower that display %, all non-Microsoft applications do return to a normal display---but then your Microsoft product screens (such as Word menus) will be tiny: you can't win.
Other than that, not much different than Vista at all as far as my experience goes (except for some extra "crumbs", like file-sharing capabilities...no TV network will be building a reality show around the extra features in Microsoft Windows 7).
I guess you'll eventually have to switch over to 7 (to stay current), but I wouldn't rush into it. I'm usually a big Microsoft fan but---at $200 for this upgrade---this smacks of an attempt by Microsoft to pad its coffers now that overall sales aren't what they were in the 80s and 90s.

Finely a good Operation System from Microsoft, less errors, faster, safely disables services that you don't need from running in the background, easy to navigate, etc.
Now I think is time to retire the good old windows XP and the "hall of shame Vista", and have hardware and software developers concentrate on better 64-bit products.

I preordered the software on Amazon.com with the intention of upgrading from Windows Vista Ultimate. When the installation wizard requested the seriel numbers. I typed the numbers and it came up invalid. I called Amazon.com Customer service and told them that the activation numbers that were provided to me did not work, and it would have to work or I have to mail back the product. I wanted it to work. She said call this number and see if you can get it fixed. When I contacted Microsoft customer service I would spend more than 15 telephone hours over 3 days to reinstall the software, remote actuate my machine, give me false product keys, while treating me like an idiot from people who had no english skills and dialects as if they were reading phonics from a machine. As audacious as it may sound, around the fourth representitive actually asked me if I have an internet connection, after the first rep had me on the telephone for 5 hours supervising the first reinstall, when I purchased Microsofts Flagship Operating System. I was passed from one caller to another, who was not aware of the previous issue that I had. "You have to repeat it so I can make sure." I felt like I purchased an interrogation. What are we going to do today that we didn't do yesterday? 4 hours later after another install (Actually said she wanted to say on the line with me, "would you please call me back in a half hour" I asked) She had me reinstall and I gave her the numbers to authenticate by phone. Your copy is invalid was the message, your copy will only be good for 29 days. Where did you get it from, did you get it from the Middle East? (it says on the label made in Peurto Rico)I told the rep I ordered it from Amazon.com. They called me back and had me simply press windows>pausebreak give them a number and then they gave me a number and it worked. I gave Windows 7 Ultimate 5 stars because it is a good operating system, and I am using it.

The only reason for getting this, and it applies to ALL Win 7's versions, would be "Work in the language of your choice and switch between any of 35 languages." because I work with 3 or 4 languages regularly, and often need the OS in the native language or something will simply not work.
As for MS and their Win offers... it's always down the slope! MS should stop trying to control people's PCs. The choice, in EVERYTHING, should be left to the user!
One thing I learned from MS, and I am a sucker for technology, and support other people's PCs often, is, NEVDER buyanything from MS until 1 year after release date; NEVER upgrade anything (SPs or Service Packs OK sometimes... yet, not always...); NEVER get anything that has not received at least ONE Service Pack bag of fixes; PREFERABLY, buy a new OS with a new machine (that may mean every 5-7 years...) because companies will send you a machine with all the drivers, etc. installed for you...
And finally, NEVER EVER upgrade if you are happy, and being productive with your current OS!!! If it ain't broke, don't fix it!...
I am planning the next couple of years to move over to LINUX based solutions, although I will keep a Win machine around for those legacy programs that won't run on a LINUX --- yet, even that is becoming less and less of a problem, with emulation, etc.

Upgrade to Windows 7
All editions of Windows XP and Windows Vista qualify you to buy an upgrade license.1. Choose your edition of Windows 7
Explore key features and choose the edition that's best for you. Be sure to check the expanded list of extended features in Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate. System requirements vary for each edition of Windows 7 because some features might require special hardware.
2. See if your PC has what it takes to run Windows 7
In general, if your PC can run Windows Vista it can run Windows 7. To make sure, download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to do a quick check. If you want certain features, such as HomeGroup or Windows Media Center, check to see if your PC has the hardware that's needed.
3. Check which operating system your PC is currently running
How you make the move to Windows 7 depends on your current operating system.
- Windows Vista
The transition to Windows 7 should be pretty smooth, although you may need to update your system to the latest service pack first.
- Windows XP (or any other operating system)
Windows 7 is best experienced on a new PC with the latest hardware, but if your computer meets the minimum specifications, you can install Windows 7 on a PC running Windows XP. Windows 7 must be "custom" installed (also known as a "clean" installation) over Windows XP. Before beginning the installation, you'll need to copy your files and settings to an external drive. After Windows 7 has been installed you will need to re-install all of your programs using the original installation media and then copy over the files and settings you backed up to your external drive. Because Windows 7 requires a custom installation, we strongly recommend that you get help with this process from your local computer service provider.
