Although This will let your laptop become an automobile GPS for a bargain price, this software is not the same as the single purpose 4 inch units that may be better at just getting you from point A to point B. The big picture you can get on your laptop is great for planning especially when you don't have an exact destination in mind. This can show every hotel, restaurant, pub, shopping center, museum etc. at a scale that lets you see where you have to go. If you are going on a trip you can view the neighborhood around the hotel you are considering and see what's there, and you can print a detailed map of the area. You can easily see all the highways on your route and avoid the shorter routes full of traffic lights that a hand held unit will often send you on. The software has a lot of features that take time to learn. One review says you have to "press spacebar" to get voice commands, you do not have to do this, pressing spacebar will repeat the last command which is not repeated automatically because there is a progress bar at the bottom which tells you how far it is to the next turn. This software and the European "autoroute" version is invaluable for a frequent traveler but it is different than the small GPS units and is not meant as a direct replacement for them.

For the most part it's a very good program. One thing that it does need is a legend of some type identifing the different road types. I use it as a GPS while I escort oversize loads and the road types listed by the states are not the one used by the states making it hard to locate the intersedtions.

I tried this product in the car and it was most useful with my Net-book as a computer platform. It permits a large screen view of the route and allows the user to explore other POIs in a planned location. Good job - Microsoft!

I had been debating whether to get a GPS (like a TomTom) and didn't want to spend that much on a navigator. So I was glad to try this product out. Of course, you have to deal with your own laptop issues in a vehicle when you want to use this - so it's a little more burdensome than a TomTom. But I found it quite useful.
The software installation was nice and simple for me - I have XP. But at home, my GPS was not picking up many satellites. It did eventually find some, but it took a while. And every time I start up the software, it seems to take a few minutes to find the satellites from inside my home. That part was not good because I wanted to make sure I knew how to use the product before going out on the road! But eventually, it would track enough satellites to give me good directions, etc. The audio was loud enough on my laptop, but I think it could stand to be louder. You never know when you're going to drive through a very noisy intersection, etc. And then there are plenty of tools in this software. Calculate the cost of a trip (you can input gas price, etc.), find good restaurant deals on a certain route, etc. I haven't used all the tools much, but I'm sure these are great for the frequent travelers.
Overall, I think for the price, this is a pretty good product.

First, I have purchased previous MS Streets & Trips every year primarily for the updated maps. Then, in 2008 Microsoft included a GPS antenna/receiver with the software, and then again in 2009. Actually the GPS function works pretty good... In fact, it offers more bells and whistles than the navigation systems in my Escalade and Beemer.
Of course, there have always been that pesky cable from the laptop to the GPS device suctioned to the windscreen, and as you are probably aware, people with a technical inclination tend to have multiple devices to mess around with during long trips... And many of those are not bluetooth capable... Yes, too many cables, and the straight cables are always snared by the coiled cables and soon it is hard to tell what's plugged into what.
Amazon sent me an e-mail touting 2010 MS Streets & Trips with a cordless GPS device. Hooray, I shouted, one less cable in the cockpit. Oops... Not exactly true... The GPS device is nothing more than a stick that plugs into a USB port. Or, if you want, you can plug the GPS device into a USB cable (included) and hang the device out the window in order for it to function continually and satisfactorily.
For my money, get the updated maps and use the device you received with a earlier version... Or find the earlier version device... At least it comes with a suction cup!
I'd call the description definitely deceiving.
