This program took over an hour to load using a broadband connection. Each time I turn my computer on, daily at least, the updates take over 20 minutes to run and my laptop slows down and Internet Explorer fails to respond. I was running Zone Alarm before McAfee Total Protection 2010 and it was slow running but not to this degree.
In addition to the slow down, at least 5 times in the last three weeks since I've installed this software, I have seen the alert "your computer is not protected" and I have to run the fix. So far the program has not found a single virus, spyware or threat to delete or quarantine. Honestly I don't know if it's even working, thus, I'm not confident enough to do any secure shopping or online banking on my laptop.

Prior to testing McAfee I had been using Norton 360 3.0 - All-In-One Security (for up to 3 Users), unfortunately my one-year subscription expired and I had to either get a new software or renew my license. When Amazon offered me the opportunity to test the new McAfee Total Protection I thought I'd give it a try rather than renewing the Norton license.
First thing I had to endure was installation, it took over an hour for McAfee to install on a computer using Windows XP; then it started downloading updates and installing them. Installation took almost two hours total, considering all the tools being install and that the upgrades are indeed required I guess I can't really complain about the process being unnecessary.
Once installed, the performance of my computer when starting the OS slowed considerably, it takes longer now to turn on the computer and get to the desktop screen to start using applications. No other things have been recently installed but McAfee. Once on, computer runs normal as it used to before the install; the performance issue I have noted happens only when turning on/shutting down the laptop.
I tried to hold the review as long as possible to provide as many details as possible based on experience. So far, it had been working ok, detecting potential threats on USB drives and the like, upgrading itself so protection is always current. Overall, other than the performance issues I had no problem whatsoever.
One of the features McAfee Total Protection offers (an a major one in my opinion), is the McAfee Site Advisor; it is a little green button that appears on the status bar of your browser. What it does is that it advises you if the website you are in is safe or not; if safe, a green check-mark will appear letting you know the site has been tested and it is secure, if not, it will switch to a red x warning you that the site is not so. The way McAfee determines if the site is secure or not, is that it will browse for available downloads from the site and test them, it will also look for online affiliations of the website and will list them so you can tell if the affiliations are ok or not.
Well, last weekend I was at home and had to program some bank transactions to take effect on Monday morning. I clicked on the saved link I have for the bank (for obvious security reasons) and then I entered my card number and personal password, the website had been hacked! and instead of taking me to the access screen of the bank where I enter the security codes the bank gave me, I was re-directed to a fake website where I was being asked to enter all my security access codes "per the bank's request"! I am smart enough not to fall for that trick, but to my surprise, McAfee's site advisor was green, the fake website that was asking for my bank information was green checked by McAfee. I clicked on the site advisor button to see more details and all the online affiliations of the hacked site were the bank's legitimate web addresses!
I could forgive the performance issues but if one of the major features being offered fails like this, I am not sure I can trust now the so called SiteAdvisor.
For the time being I will continue using McAfee Total Protection hoping to be able to provide more insight, it really isn't a bad anti-virus software and like I said, it had been working well until this problem happened. If the McAfee Site Advisor is not a decision making point for you when getting this, I guess I can recommend it without a problem.

The McAfee 2010 Total Protection is easy to install and works excellantly. There is a toll free tech support number that I called when installing this on my second computer and they were fantastic in helping me. For the first 30 days the tech support is free.

I've used three different anti-virus programs in the past--two from a different company and currently this one from McAfee. I've been using McAfee for almost a month now on a computer running Windows XP. In that time, I've not noticed any slowdowns or deleterious effects on system performance caused by this software. Also, there are no intrusive pop-ups. You set it up, and it just does its job. That's all I expect of anti-virus software.

Upon installation I as relieved at just how easy it was. I installed it on both our XP box and our Vista Box. And was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to install. I've tried other programs that were tedious or even complicated to install. This one was not, it installed like a breeze and even updated easily. The problems begin once its installed. Computer performance as immediately impacted system wide. At first I thought it as simply doing a scan and so I let it run overnight. The next day it as still slow. Then I tried to surf the web. This program brought web surfing to a crawl. Again I thought that once I was surfing for a while it would do whatever it is doing in the background and things would improve. This was not the case. After a couple of days of optimistic waiting to see if it would get any better I finally gave up and un-installed it.
