Cannot compare this to other "universal" remotes - 1st one for me. Purchased based on reviews. I needed a remote to run multiple devices on RF and wanted easiest programing possible. Was difficult to spend the $ - but has been worth it for me. We have a new house with pre-wiring done so we have only a LCD Samsung hanging in the living room with in-ceiling speakers + subwoofer (trying for a very "clean look") and all the components in another room. Currently have the remote running an Onkyo HDMI reciever, an Insignia BD player, Direct HD DVR, and a VCR all on RF.

    Programming.
This works well. On your computer - you enter your equipment info and then go through step-by-step set-up for your different "activities" (i.e. "watch TV", "watch DVD" etc.). I'm not incredibly tech-savvy - but must say the programing is pretty easy and seems to "make-sense" (at least to me). You then hook-up the remote via USB and it gets programmed. You then test the set-up and the remote's screen walks you thru it. Right now I have 6-7 activities - and all work well. I've also had no problems adding equipment and activities after the initial set-up.

    Function:
I think the most important feature is that the activities are listed on the remote's touch-screen with a small icon and everyone in the family "get's it" and WE HAVE ONE REMOTE! The remote's buttons do a good-job covering all the buttons/functions for the Direct Player and BD -even the 4 color buttons. My sense is that there could be some missing function from the receiver-remote but in my case - these are more "specialized" buttons - and used very rarely. You can also go into each "device" and drive is separately from the programed "activities".

    Cons:
My only (almost) con - is the range of the RF (beside the cost). I have the RF blaster in the study that is separated from the living room by a stair-case. The claim is 100 ft. range for the RF. Our blaster is more like 30 ft away - with two walls in-between and is on the outside limit of range for use. I needed to move the blaster around a bit to get it receiving the single from the remote 100% of the time. If our set-up necessitated any more distance - the RF function would be almost unusable and the remote would have not "worked" at all.

In the end - this has been perfect for me....Able to run many components on RF, "simple" to program and very easy to use and replaces the other 9 remotes we have and runs everything seamlessly.

A basic multifuntion remote will be a lot less frustrating for a basic remote. So far it does not execute all the programmed functions. The website programming software locks up and will not communicate with the remote without multiple reboots. Input list includes all those on my tv but there is no option to add all of them to the device screen. Way too much effort required and multiple updates required to try to get all devices added and funtions programmed. Still cant manage to get the cable on, the tv on and the correct input selected. Have to use guideded help every time to get everything on and off. Save your money and get a cheaper version.

I have owned harmony remotes for probably ten years now, and can say that the hardware is getting better and better. In fact, this is the first Harmony remote where I did not reminisce fondly and yearn for my TiVO peanut remote.

It feels the same way my iphone feels in hand, the touch screen is excellent (even though i prefers buttons), and speaking of buttons, they are solid and are very responsive.
My only nit with regards to the design/hardware is the battery compartment. It seems overly complicated, and loose --it's the grey cover at the bottom of the remote. Oddly, the remote cover seems to be an on-going problem with Harmony. On my 890, i could never get the remote cover off, on my 680, it would break off. Logitech, one word "SCREWS", like on kids toys.

Now, my major complaint. The software hasn't seem to have really improved in ten years... It is the best solution out there, but is buggy. First off, the other reviewers are correct -- probably will not work with your mac, there seem to be ongoing driver issues. The easy way out is to run windows in a virtual machine or boot camp, and be done with it. The SAME problem when I got my 890. Poor mac support on product launch. Logitech, it's OK to launch with mac support later! Just say so.

UPDATE: With the latest update to the desktop software, OSX support is working now, and there are several articles on the logitech support site that address Macintosh driver problems. Don't bother trying to use their search to find the articles, use google. Review still stands though --GREAT PRODUCT, GOOD SOFTWARE, POOR SUPPORT.

Finally, old harmony users... you will have to reprogram your account(s) from scratch. "your old account is not compatible" with the 900. Macros and custom programming be-gone.

Great product, good software, poor support.

BUT, Harmony makes the best remotes out there --better than the all the low AND high end custom remotes, period.

I replaced a defective 890 by this one. I am very happy. The tactile screen is great, the form factor is better and the keyboard layout is better (for Tivo). I have none of the range problems others have complained about.

This is my 2nd logitech harmony remote. The first one was an 890 model, and it was problematic for my specific devices. In fact, I never got it to work to the point where I could totally replace all of my remotes.

When the 900 model came out, and the price came down (got it new on the famous auction site for $285), I thought I'd try it. Glad I did! Although it took me a couple of hours of fiddling around with the settings for each "Activity", I finally have full control of my devices and do not need to use any other remotes. Yea!

I'm controlling a Samsung 40" LCD, a Soundmatters audio device, a PS3 (had to buy the extra adapter from Logitech), and a Dish Network Vip722 DVR. I'm using the Radio Frequency (RF) controlled IR blasters that come with the remote, just because I don't want to have to point the remote at my devices. If you don't have a closed cabinet for your devices and are used to pointing a remote towards the TV, then you probably don't even need to use the included IR system. Just use InfraRed (IR) as normal with most remotes.

$300 still seems like a lot of money for a remote control, but this one works, so I find it worth the cost.
