Installed without difficulty using Charter cable. You'll need your account number and the MAC address of your old modem (if upgrading).
You'll go through a brief setup on a Charter web site that comes up automatically when the modem is plugged in. There should be no reason to call Charter tech support.
I have a 10mb down / 1mb up connection. With this modem, my bandwidth test sometimes reports 12mb down / 1mb up. My previous modem maxed out at 10mb.

i used to use the motorola modem provided by cable service provider and decided to try out different modem this time because i saw people reviews saying they got faster speeds. i think i'm getting my max speed that i paidi for. initially, i was getting much faster (~20mbps) but i think i am now being regulated. also, i haven''t had to reset the modem yet...it's been several months!

When COMCAST decided to increase their cable modem rental fee 66% in November, to $5/month, I decided to do something about it. This $68 Linksys Cable Modem, Model CM100, is exactly what you need. You can check on the COMCAST website for a whole list of compatible modems. I decided on this one since I have a Linksys router (WRT54G).
This installation is very simple. Remove the COMCAST modem. Someone in another review said you need to remove your router temporarily for this installation, so I did that and connected the CM100 directly to the ethernet connector on the computer. Once you did that, you need to call COMCAST and give them the S/N and the MAC Address, both of which are printed on the bottom of the Linksys CM100 unit. They enter your new info in their system and you are up and running. It really is as simple as that.
You can then go ahead and reconnect your router. I found I had to power off/on the CM100, router, and computer and I no longer have to pay COMCAST monthly.

Comcast in the San Francisco area is my cable and internet provider. I have rented their modem at $3 a month for many years.
They did me a favor when it was announced that they would be increasing their modem rental to $5 a month!
I bought the Linksys CM 100 Cable Modem, made by Cisco, after reading a review of how good it worked with Comcast, with faster speed than when using the Comcast modems.
Installation was easy, BUT, remember to unplug your router if you have one, and plug the modem directly into your computer for installation. It would have been nice if the installations directions and CD which came with the modem made that very clear, because, even though I showed connectivity, when I called Comcast to give them the MAC number and get my new modem registered with them, I could not get a browser to open up.
Comcast has always been very helpful if I have ever had a connectivity problem, and that was the first question they asked: Did I have a router?
Once I disconnected the router and reinstalled the modem with the CD, which took 2 minutes, Comcast got me online and my browser came up right away, and I reconnected my router with no problems since.
In less than a year at $5 a month my modem will have paid for itself with the one time cost. I am very happy with it, and thank Comcast for saving me money in this regard!

After using a different cable modem for years, one 'highly' recommended by the cable company and techies at a very popular Comuter, etc, store, I purchased the CM100. I have not had one single problem as compared to five or more per week with the recommended one. The CM100 is very easy to install and understand. A miracle in itself!
