I've been using my KindleDx for about three months. What I like most about it is that it is much easier to read in bed than are many hardcovers. I also like the fact that I can store numerous books on it so that it is easy and convenient to simply pick up my Kindle rather than search throughout the house for where I might have left a couple of books. The words are easy to read on the screen, easier in low light than are most paperbacks. I also like the speed with which I am able to access new reading material via the 2 minute or so wireless download. Also, with the built-in dictionary, it is easy to highlight a new word and its definition immediately appears at the bottom of the page. Another positive feature is that one can download a sample of a book one is thinking of buying. I have used this a few times and the length of the free samples have varied widely. Nevertheless, this feature has saved me money when I read material that was not what I was looking for.
As a long-time Amazon customer, I wish that I had only positive things to say about my KinldeDx experience because I have been impressed over the years with their excellent customer service. I was sorry to read that some other Kindle users have had poor experiences with their Kindle and with Amazon's insensitivity to their problems with it.
I am disappointed by the following Kindle features:
(1) There are no page numbers. Thus I am unable to track exactly a passage displayed on Kindle with the identical passage in print format. This makes it impossible to quote an author by correctly citing the page where his/her words originally appeared (Kindle refers to places in the work as "locations").
(2) Searching out footnotes for the specific references is tedious at best (click, click, and more clicks) and impossible at worst. In one book I downloaded, "The Wonder of Numbers," I cannot access the answers to various puzzles the author presents because when I click on the link for more information, I get caught in a loop that brings me back to the page I was trying to exit from!
(3) The "keyboard" (if you can call it that) is so tiny that mistakes in typing are unavoidable - so I am back to the one letter at a time method.
(4) Charts or graphs found in some science books are often unreadable. In one case, the Kindle chart was set at a 90 degree angle from what it was supposed to be and when I rotated my Kindle to try to see it correctly, the Kindle chart also rotated! Only by holding the Kindle at a 45 degree angle and tilting my head in the same direction, was I able to make some sense of the graph. Thus, I will no longer even consider buying a science oriented book to read on Kindle.
(5)The "subscriptions" to various print media are outrageously overpriced and I have not been tempted to buy any of them.
I have experienced only one technical glitch with my Kindle. While reading, the screen suddenly went blank and all of the prior books I had downloaded vanished. I emailed Amazon tech support immediately (this was late at night) and within 12 hours, I got an email suggesting I reset the Kindle (explicit, clear instructions about how to do this was provided) and the problem was solved. Sometimes, like others have reported here, I get odd lines running across the screen that interfere with my reading experience but these events have been transitory and short-lived.
I have used the text-to-voice feature only once and that was disappointing because all dialogue was preceded and concluded by the Kindle voice saying "quotation mark."
In summary, had I to do it over again, I would not buy the Kindle Dx. Later generations may improve the annoying features I mentioned. And the price might come down. The only person I know who absolutely LOVES her Kindle is a compulsive reader who has low tolerance for frustration. If immediate gratification is high on your list of priorities, you too might love it.

I bought this big Kindle with expectations beyond its ability to deliver. Strike one: the battery does not last nearly as long as the myriad advertising claims.
Strike two: I cannot download if I am in Canada.
And the page number of the book does not appear (an irritation). It is B&W of course in this day of color everything. The capacity to hold 350,000 books sounds nice, but the price tag of that, not to mention the impracticality of the idea, will bring one back to reality very quickly.
Strike three: grossly, grossly overpriced! Cannot recommend it.

I am enjoying it however to be critical I would like to point out a few things that it can improve on.
First and foremost the readability of all ebooks purchase on amazon are great. Its books that are in pdf format that cannot be made clearer through zooming when it comes to problems. I don't know why but for some reason it seems the accelerometer stopped working when I changed the orientation to read the book in landscape view.
Accelerometer is not fast enough to adjust the view so try not moving around some much in bed or disable it altogether if you are not so stationary type of reader.
Forget about the web browser as it is super slow especially in spotty Sprint coverage as where I live. Hopefully, they come up with a version with wifi support.
If you own a DSLR upload your photos first to facebook before loading them onto your Kindle, because it will take forever to view those photos on that Kindle.
I personally would wait for the touch version that fixes the readability problem revealed in the Sony Reader, because I find myself far too often touching the device either to turn a page or enable some on-screen control which would be extremely convenient if it were more visible as opposed to on the sides where they are extremely small and hard to differentiate because they are painted white with no visible legend.
Also, no SDHC or SD Card support means you need a PC.
No Bluetooth support so forget about transferring files wirelessly.
I found that although it was light in weight in comparison to a Netbook or a laptop, but far weighter than any book if you happened to extend your hands and hold the book away from your body without the support of any table, stomach, leg or anything else that would help you lift objects to your face.
I personally think the leather case should come included with the purchase of the Kindle, because if you are like me you would want to protect your Kindle from possible theft as to obscure it with the leather case.
The QWERTY keyboard is hard to type with as well as they need to be raised a little more. Individual keys are spread too far apart. It seems the keyboard was designed more around style than usability and comfort.
PDF support for the most part is adequate given all the caveats which I think they should try to overcome and be more open and inclusive to other formats and not just their own. If you have a book that has been scanned correctly than what I am saying next does not apply. If your book was not properly scanned and because zooming does not working PDF you would probably need to think about reading that book on your PC instead, because Kindle tends to crop the book and not make use of the full screen with unproperly formatted books with alot of image problems.
Mp3 playback is not good as the speakers tend to reverberate badly distorting playback in certain genres.
If someone can please instruct me how to turn off the screensaver, because when examining diagrams or drawings it would be nice to not have that invoked every 10 minutes.

I have had my Kindle DX for only a few weeks but I now have concluded that the Blackberry is not the real 'crackberry', the Kindle DX is! Since buying it I have used it for more than three hours per day, and now obtain most of my current news with it also. The books are easier to read on the Kindle DX than the are in the original, for the most part. There are a few unexpected benefits: 1) the inventory of all purchases at Amazon makes unintended multiple buys of the same item a thing of the past (Am I the only person who did that?), 2) Downloads via USB though my computer means I have easy access anywhere in the world without need for the global (smaller) Kindle, 3) The occasional free downloads actually include things I want, 4) the non-English inventory is small but it does have many things I want including a decent selection of periodicals and newspapers, 5) the Kindle-based selections of blogs includes all the industry specific ones I need and they're much more convenient on the Kindle than on my laptop or desktop, 6) Once one turns off the wireless the battery life is excellent, I get roughly a week, 6) The screen savers, with authors and dignitaries of the ages rotating, is clever, at least for a few weeks.
Not everything is perfect: 1) the complaints about the Amazon cover are well-placed because it is hard not to occasionally try to open from the back, which will seriously damage the DX, so it is reported. Small straps for the unattached side would resolve that problem easily. 2) There needs to be some sort of sleeve in the cover to hold a little paper and maybe even a pen. 3) There should be a stap to allow the Kindle DX to be carried like a computer bag, but smaller. 4) there is minimal indexing, and there ought to be user-controlled folders to allow retention of documents and reference works in a decent system. 5) The DX needs controls on both sides, like the smaller versions, not just on the right.
I have tried a couple color versions of electronic readers and prefer the Kindle B&W because the battery life is far better, the contrast is excellent and I don't read very many books, blogs or newspapers in color anyway. The smaller versions are much less usable than the DX also, although one pays dearly for the extra size. The most serious problem? I'm actually spending more on books because "one-click" makes it so quick and easy and the prices are so good that I buy more than I did before. After all the books weigh nothing extra when I fly, as I do almost every week.

The only thing I really wish the Kindle DX had in addition to everything else is ... a backlighting feature that had a separate on/off switch that could be used at night or in low lighting...to eliminate the need for a separate book light.
