I played of GOW and knew right away when the announced the release of GOW 2 that I had to buy it. I was not disappointed at all. The gameplay is smooth and they added a few new features from the first one (Gliding, new secondary weapons and powers). The gameplay is similar to the first GOW with new combos, but you still have to build up your weapons with the blood points you collect. If you liked the first one, this is a MUST buy. I can't wait for the third one.

Having recently played through the first god of war I promptly went to Amazon.com and purchased the second installation. I was not disappointed, though I wasnn't overly wowed either, like I was playing the first game.
God of War II is basically a continuation of Kratos' unending slaughter of the various contrived monsters of Greek mythology. The gameplay is similiar to God of War I, but with some simple improvements that I think, overall, have made the game a much more playable experience.
What is good? The story, despite being a tacked on continuation of an ended plot is interesting. I was actually more drawn in to the plot of God of War II then I, and the accompanying cut scences were engaging. I'd comment that the story alone won't be enough to keep you interested, but it certainly will suppliment the already fun gameplay.
Which is... fun. Yes, the gameplay is fun, and for the same reasons as the first game. Nothing is really new in this department. Kratos is given more weapons, new spells, ect. And, to their credit, these new weapons and spells are more fun then the original games' selection. That said, you will still only use your primary blades, due to their extensive variety of moves when compared to the other weapons. Beyond the superficial, don't expect too much new. Some old annoying sections of gameplay have been replaced by different styles of annoying gameplay, and more puzzles to fill in content. It really does make me sad to think how obnoxious some of the puzzles were. Not hard, never hard, just annoying, due to the fact you often spend copious amounts of time running around trying to vainly determine which walls were climbable, and which items of the landscape breakable.
The major positive of this game over its predescesor is that you will fight a ton more boss battles. Many of which are outright a blast.
The game is slightly longer, though went faster for me, since I already had the game mechanics down.
Quicktime events have been steamlined, and tend to be less annoying and more "awesome."
The negatives of this game is that it really is just more of the same. Awesome, but similiar, and with less of the epic feel of its predecesor. Again, still fun for anyone who thought that first was a good time, but not a seminal sequel.
Buy if you want the gameplay of the original, don't if you think you have experienced it.

1.) Story - This is one of the few aspects of the game that I feel was not as good as the first. That is not to say it's bad, but it could have been better. The story of this second game is one of betrayal. Kratos, after having become the new God of War at the conclusion of the first game, begins this adventure by having his powers taken away from him. He thus sets out on a quest to seek revenge against those who he feels have wronged him. The story is simple, much like that of the first game, and contains a plentiful amount of greek mythology, but some of the decisions made by the writer were not for the best.
For starters, one of the returning supporting characters from the first game is a shell of it's former self in this game. This character, which was intelligent, rational, and a leader in the first game does not have the determined resolve that it had in the first game and comes off as weak, irrational, indecisive and a follower. I can't say who without it being a spoiler, so I apologize if this part sounds confusion and dumb.
Another thing I didn't like was that a few new characters that were introduced in this game don't feel right. Both of these games take liberties with greek mythology, but in the first one all of the characters have the same personalities that they had in the ancient myths. The things they were or had done may be different from the history books, but their personalities were still intact. But in this game, the new characters they introduced are nothing like they are in the tales. The biggest offender of this is Perseus, who in legend was a noble and brave hero, is now just an arrogant spoiled brat who is impressed with himself.
The writer also reveals more of Kratos' backstory and we learn something about him we didn't know before. Again, can't say what that is without spoiling anything, but I think it was a bad move. I always assumed in the first game that Kratos' badass-ness was because he was determined and focused on his task. But after learning this new fact, not only does he no longer seem like such a badass, but he now feels like one giant cliche. One that has been seriously overused in recent video games.
Regardless of these points, the story is still good enough to get the job done.
2.) Gameplay/Controls - The controls in this game are the same as the last with a few minor tweaks, which is a good thing. One is that it is now less annoying to open doors in this game. Instead of rapidly pressing the R2 button, you now only press R2 once to grab it and then rapidly press the circle button, which is less awkward then the old way. Also, some of Kratos' combos for his main weapon have been changed. I liked the old combos, but these new ones aren't bad and you can get used to them quickly. Also, Kratos has more alternative weapons this time around. As opposed to the first game, where you only had one alternative weapon, you now have access to three. I was never too fond of Artemis' Blade in the first game and none of the new ones in this game did anything for me either, but lots of others have like these new alternatives and have enjoyed them much more than Kratos' standard blades. He also will gain a piece of armor that allows him to not only block an enemy magic attack, but shoot it right back at his opponents. Very cool.
Kratos also has new magic spells this time. A few of them are similar in function to the ones you had in the first game, so it doesn't feel that cool, but some are pretty neat. Additionally, Kratos will gain the ability to temporarily slow down time. A great feature that comes in handy when battling a large group of enemies, a boss, or for solving a puzzle that can lead you to a valuable treasure. And on a minor note, red (experience point) orbs will be attracted to Kratos no matter how far away they are. This is great because in the first game if they were really far, they would just stay there, and if you couldn't get to them in time, they would disappear and all your hard work was for not.
They also improved on the platforming in this game. The platforming segments are more plentiful and you have more tools for dealing with them. Mainly, with the addition of Icarus' wings, which allow you to glide through the air, and you can now use Kratos' blades to grapple onto chains and hooks suspended from certain areas in the environments.
The bosses are of the same great quality that they were in the first game, requiring you to use your head to think about unorthodox ways to defeat them, but in this game there are ALOT more of them. The same goes for puzzles in the game, only they feel much more rewarding in this game for some reason.
Unfortunately though, the game still uses quick time events when battling bosses and larger enemies and will still spawn in extra enemies on a regular basis. I wish Yu Suzuki never thought to put QTEs in Shenmue. It's because of him and that game that we have to put up with them. And spawning in extra enemies is just a dumb tactic that needs to be phased out of video games altogether (you hear that Infinity Ward? That crap better not be in Modern Warfare 2).
Another minus for this game is the large number of enemies in the game that we already saw in the first game. AND they pull the same recycling trick that they used in the first game. That is where they change the color of the enemies skin and make it stronger and that somehow counts as a new enemy.
But, on the plus side, this game has quick loading screens and no in-level loading stops just like the first game.
3.) Graphics - I didn't think it was possible, but God of War 2 is actually even better looking than the first. Everything has alot more detail than the first. Not to mention, you will see environments that are much more diverse. In the first game, I don't remember seeing any plant life. In this game, you will find yourself in swamps, mountains, forrests, and even the hellish depths of Tartarus.
4.) Sound - The music is again of the great caliber as the first, as are the sound effects. Voice actor is the same as the first, with certain characters standing out against the rest and some corny dialogue here and there. Michael Clarke Duncan as Atlas sounds phoned-in.
Overall, a nice improvement over the first, but still a 4 out of 5.
