This was my first time playing the DOA series on a non-Xbox platform. This was the last entry in the series that appeared on Playstation platforms. So after being a die-hard fan of the series on my Xbox and Xbox 360 do I think it's just as kickass as the Xbox entries? Oh hell yes. This version of DOA 2 is essentially a PS2-port of the Dreamcast original with extra features. This is easily a very recommendable PS2 game.
WHAT THE GAME IS: The second entry in the critically-acclaimed fighting series from Tecmo and Team Ninja. It tells the stories of several fighters as they compete in the DOA Tournament and what their motivations are. However, the series has never been known for a great storyline, it's known for its infamous virtual breasts, graphics, and awesome fighting.
GRAPHICS: This game easily puts many PS2 games to shame, even to this day. This game actually still looks impressive and it was released in 2001! The visuals are almost on par with the Xbox entries, but there are some setbacks in the visual department. The water and fire effects are very pathetic looking compared to the fantastic water and fire effects in the Xbox versions. Also, the textures aren't as good on Xbox. Still, this is a great-looking game for such an old console.
MUSIC: The music was actually pretty good and keeps in good tune with the fighting and what not.
SOUND: Oh God. This is another area the Xbox version of DOA 2 does better. It says on the back of the box that this game can be in English or Japanese, but I can't find the option to put it in Japanese. Why? The English voice-overs are painful as all hell to listen to. So the voice-acting is the worst part of the entire game. The sound effects sounded good at the time, but they sound a little staticky and old. Probably because it's a port of the old Dreamcast version. Other than the voice-acting, the sound is good, but the PS2 can do better.
GAMEPLAY: Despite the gripes I've had with some of the technical issues, this is one helluva stellar fighting game from one of my favorite game franchises. The fighting is balanced quite nicely and you have a number of moves at your disposal and they're easy to pull off. None of the characters feel the same and it's always a different experience when playing with each of them. This game also has a slew of awesome multiplayer modes that give this fantastic game even better replay value and it's always fun to bring a buddy into the fun.
OVERALL: If you own a PS2, you should get this game, it's absolutely fantastic and a highly polished fighting game. The game has great visuals, great gameplay, good music, and cool characters. Get it immediately.
THE GOOD: The fighting gameplay, the great visuals, the music, the cool characters, and some extra features not included in the Dreamcast original.
THE BAD: Terrible English voice-overs, some graphical and sound problems.

Pros: Good graphics, fluid moves, diverse characters.

Cons: Story mode too short, voice acting.

This is a good game with great graphics. The combos in fights are harder than Tekkens and get this, if you want to counter, you have to push square and the same buttons that your opponent pushes. On DOA3 on XBOX they made the countering easier by just pushing 1 button. The modes on offer are single player, two player, tag team, survival and sparring and probally more. You can watch CPU bots go at it to see what the game has to offer. You can also kick oppenents through cenenery such as stained glassed windows, that makes the game alot better.

If you're are skilled at fighting games by stringing together combo's then this is worth 5 stars.

Dead or Alive 2 first turned heads as an arcade title that was later ported to the Dreamcast earlier this year. Now, the definitive version of the game, DOA 2 Hardcore has emerged to go up against the likes of Tekken Tag Tournament and Street Fighter EX3 as the PS2 launches. It's an easy call to say DOA 2 is the most visually captivating of them all. Game play wise, the fighting engine is solid, although the attack reversals work a bit too well and the disproportionate damage they cause keeps the combat system from truly achieving its potential. The game's audio is simply awesome with great stage music and well-done Japanese voices. The awkward English voices make the already nonsensical story even more so. If it's any consolation, fighting game plots rarely make much sense anyway. While DOA 2 Hardcore doesn't sport as many hidden characters as its competition, it does feature the beloved hidden-costume unlocking feature that is a trademark of the series. This is one of those debates that will certainly rage on and even in the GamePro offices not all are in total agreement. Suffice it to say that the fighting game the majority of the Gamepro.com staff will buy is DOA 2 Hardcore. For fighting enthusiasts, DOA2 Hardcore is the first must have game for the PlayStation 2. End of story.
