Great graphics, very creepy, great gameplay. Not much of a story to it but if you watch the animated movie it makes more sense. Hope they make a a second.

There are a lot of positives about this game but overall it wasn't all that interesting or fun. 2 out of 5.

The good: Great use of sound to create an atmosphere, it's really top notch in that regard. The graphics are also quite good. There is no need for a heads up display as your suit and weapon indicate your health and ammo count, and when you do need a pop up menu it shows up live in the game to perserve realism. The customizations and options to upgrade your gear as you see fit are also a nice touch. Environments look great.

The mediocre: The story is a B- and characters are just ok. A lot of things in this game are pretty derivative of others, there's a Half-Life-esque gravity gun type weapon for example. Weapons are so-so overall.

The bad: Aiming leaves a lot to be desired, could use a sensitivity adjustment as many other games have. Also the gameplay gets pretty repetitve, and worse that that the enemies are totally dull. Just plain boring.

The horrible and annoying: The asteroid shooting sequence. If you're not an experienced shooter, prepare to be stuck on this level for quite awhile, even on easy. It's difficult and lasts way too long (about 2 minutes), and extremely frustrating. There needs to be a cheat or something to bypass it. It does nothing for the game.

Despite my rating for this game, I think all of the mechanics are in place to make an excellent sequel. Tighten up the aiming, give some legit (fun) enemies, and do away with the goofy mini-games and I think you could have a masterpiece. But as of right now it's a "nice try, but..."

I just recently picked up this game though it's been out for quite a while now. I read the reviews and all seemed quite positive. I usually ignore the comments that rave about how "scary" a game is...I really don't see how a video game is going to give you nightmares but hey, that's just me. So, I get the game and start playing. I immediately notice the graphics. Though the atmosphere of the game is intentionally very dark, the game looks gorgeous. The backgrounds and attention to detail by the developers is really impressive.

The voice work is good though don't expect your character to utter a word, which frankly just seems odd. The other characters yammer on and on while they merrily order you around to do their dirty work while you obediently follow their every command. The controls are easy to pick up once you get into the game. There are all kinds of helpful hints popping up all over the screen and well, they are almost as demanding as your shipmates in their efforts to be reviewed. Sound effects are quite good throughout the game.

The storyline...at first it's all a big and rather intersting mystery. What happened? What are these things? Where are all the people? Soon, you won't really care because the story disintegrates rather quickly as you find out more and you mostly end up just wandering around from place to place, flipping this switch, moving that box, resetting that machine and all the time you'll be attacked randomly by various creepy looking monsters. Now, when these attacks first happen, they are quite startling. The gore was flying everywhere. But after that happens a few dozen times, the thrill is gone and shooting the limbs off the same creatures repeatedly becomes tedious.

The game has stores scattered about to purchase ammo, med kits, etc and move your limited inventory items that you just can't part with into a vault so you can't access it when you really need it. The game also uses a work bench system to upgrade your weapons and your suit and it's really a shame that you can't upgrade Isaac's personality because he really sucks. It takes forever to actually accomplish anything on the work bench which seems completely unnecessary and rather pointless. After all I have things to do...I have to restart the flux capacitor in the zero gravity room because my team mate told me to then I have to go back to that other room, kill those monsters and pick up that part to use in some other area and then go back to the flux capacitor, kill those monsters again and BLAH BLAH BLAH. The game rapidly becomes tedious and well, quite boring. There, I've said it, call me what you will.

    To summarize my opinion:

    The Good:
    ~Graphics
    ~Game controls
    ~Voice work
    ~Some initial "scare" factor
    ~Lots of gore
~The game tricks you into thinking it will be new and different

    The Bad:
~The storyline falls apart rather quickly
~The character you play is about as interesting as a pile of dirt
    ~Upgrade system is lame
~Everyone loves to boss you around and you just TAKE it
~The game tricks you into thinking it will be new and different when it's really just REPETITIVE...there I've said that too.

It's got a relatively small price tag and at this point you could probably pick it up in a bargain bin so is it worth it...sure. Again, it's not a terrible game by any means but I just got really bored with doing and killing the same things over and over.

Definitely the scariest game I have ever played. Decent storyline and voice acting as well. weapons are scarce, but it makes you want to play the game over again to obtain all of them. Probably the best aspect of the game is the sound. It definitely creates an atmosphere of isolation and hopelessness.
