Remotely accessing files through the Internet is also possible with the built-in FTP server. When configuring the DNS-323, you can create users and groups and assign them to folders with either read or read/write permissions. This is ideal for an office environment with employee-specific sensitive data or for the home where you can ensure your children will only have access to age appropriate material. « short desciption

I had purchased this item to share a SATA drive to act as backup and file server for my media. This unit performed wonderfully for a while. It was in use for a short while when I noticed that it would get quite warm and sometimes make a humming noise. The noise would stop if I moved it a little (a fraction of an inch) on my desk. Recently this NAS stopped working completely. I've had this unit for 8 months almost to the day.
My husband has made multiple phone calls to D-Link to see what can be done. He has spoken to several Customer Service people that have told him that he needs to speak with someone in RMAC. Every time he tries to call RMAC he has either been hung up on or he keeps getting kicked back to Customer Service.
We have had problems in the past regarding D-Links customer support with defective items. This unit was purchased with the recommendation from a friend that has used a similar item before. For us this was D-Links one last chance to have us as a customer. After this D-Link will not be getting any more of our money.

There are some great reviews about this product already posted on this website so mine will simply echo them. The hardware is good (processor is a bit slow so it struggles when you are downloading torrents and mediatomb is indexing at the same time), its relatively quiet (I am sure it will be even better once I figure out how to shut the fan off) and drive installation is a breeze. Where it suffers, which seems to be the case in every one of these linux devices, is the stock firmware just doesn't do what you want it to.
I bought this unit because of the development going on around it and it does not disappoint. Its relatively painless to upgrade the abilities of the unit, a few hours at most and you will be up and running with a stable upnp/DLNA client, ftp server, bit torrent client and more. However, you should be prepared to do a little text based editing.

Got this NAS with a pair of 1-TB Western Digital Cavier Eco for a week now, so far works great no problem and an affordable price. Morphology design is not as cool as the Cisco-Linksys, but cost 2X less, and done the same exact job I don't blame it, don't go for the looks, since it stored away. Recommended, but better if users are above intermediate in order to get the best out of NAS, setting up FTP ip with Router, Switches etc..

This is a great item for personal use. I use it for backup and storing data with a MS Windows Vista and a Linux laptop.
Unfortunately, the provided software has some serious security issues (web interface and ftp server) if the NAS is used in an untrusted network, so use it only within your private network. Also, part of the web interface is written in a poor English.
The shared printer is a good idea as well, unfortunately it is not possible to connect an additional USB hard drive to the port unless you hack the device.
The operating system of the NAS is Linux, this is why it will ask you to format the disks to ext2 filesystem. Do not put disks with data in the NAS the first time you run it or it will erase them!
If you have time and skills, I advise you to hack the system. There is a good wiki website and a forum that can be easily found on the web. You can add a telnet or - even better - a ssh server, NFS support for linux systems and even install a chrooted Linux or compile your own kernel. Beware: hack the device at your own risk!
For basic usage the device is still OK - but much less powerful. Also, check the firmware version of your NAS and upgrade it to the latest version (currently 1.07 released on 4-16-2009).

I have three of these, each with a pair of 1.5TB SATA hard drives running a mirror raid and they run great.
Setup was a snap. Installed drives in less than a minute. After setup including formatting of drives they were immediately useable over our 1gb network. Drives power down after non-use to save power but restart if addressed with little delay.
