This is a great multifunction unit!
STRENGTHS
-Cost: Try to find it refurbished. I got mine for $40.
-Very fast faxing and scanning with the automatic document feeder (ADF). Most units with an ADF are far more expensive.
-Doubles as a card reader, with a number of card types accepted. It has one-button operation ("Photo Capture") to access the files on the card.
-Programmable scanning modes: You can program 4 quickly-accessible scanning modes (ex: scan in B&W at 400dpi with a pdf output) through the software.
WEAKNESSES
-The unit can be difficult to work with when someone is on the phone line. Sometimes it won't turn on or won't let you perform certain operations.
-The printing quality is okay, but not spectacular. The cartridges are expensive, but I bought off-brand cartridges, which seem to work just fine.
-It has a color and black button, but those are just for copying; it would be great if they were for scanning too.
-The scan quality is not the greatest, but it's good enough for scanning in documents. I've cleaned up my office a lot by scanning in hundreds of pages quickly with the ADF.
Overall, the machine is a steal, if only for the automatic document feeder.

We bought this printer to replace an old All in one Epson that had clogged its printer head. The good thing is that it is on the lower end of cost. I checked it out at Office max and it seemed like it was pretty sturdy. It was net work ready (LAN only)and it doesn't need to be connected to a running computer all the time. This was a must for our family and this would also be good for a small business. The ink is less expensive than most of the other brands (e.g. HP, Epson, Cannon, etc...) and this was also attractive. We bought it and after having to go online to figure out how to install the client so we could connect to it from our various computers we had it up and running.
I can't comment on the print quality except to say that it was good enough for me (I only print Journal articles so I don't need ultra sharp), but some might find it along the poor end of the quality spectrum. I was able to scan, print, copy with out difficulty. I did have some problems with the card reader, but I wasn't planning on using this function anyway. I never used the fax function as we don't have a LAN line. We never tried printing photos, but it was capable of doing this. It would clean its self several times a day, and that caused the color cartages to run out even though we weren't using them.
Our biggest frustration and the reason for replacing it was the paper drawer. First of all it has a very low capacity (100 sheets). Our unit's draw stuck so we had to take off the back cover and slide a stiff piece of cardboard under a lever that wasn't lifting properly. After doing some online searches this is a common problem with this model.
So in short it is a cheep networkalbe printer. The ink is cheep to replace. The set up on a network is somewhat difficult, and you may need to go online to get it right. The engineering is flawed and you may have difficulties with the drawer. As I said in the posting title I would pass this one by.

Pros:
Low profile - for a printer/scanner/fax with a NIC in it, it is much smaller than you would think.
Multi-page copy/scan - but not double-sided :(
Super easy cartridge changing system - simply open a small panel on the front of the printer, pull the tab, and the cartridge pops out!
Scan/Print directly to/from memory card!
Pictbridge (haven't used)
DID I say it's network-compatible!?
Cons:
Photo printing. This thing totally sucks for photo-printing. It always makes my picturs have a bluish tint to them - no matter how high I adjust the red or how low I adjust the blue levels. I have swapped out caartridges, changed the type of paper, but it just does not do a good job with photos. I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to photography, so this may be acceptable to the normal user, but I had to go out and buy a separate photo printer to meet my photo printing needs!
Scanning software sucks. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't

I almost didn't order it after reading some of these reviews. What a mistake that would have been. I love it. I have a home office and was looking for a new all-in-one because my lexmark has been having problems and it's Huge! I ordered a refurbished one of these Brothers from Staples for $29.99 and free shipping. What a deal, and it came with 4 new ink cartridges. It runs great and looks brand new. Some people put down that it uses lots of ink, paper jams and runs cleaning mode at start up every time, wasting even more ink. I have not expierenced any of these problems. It even came with the new installation disk I needed to make it compatable with Vista. It couldn't hae been any easier to hook-up and install. Took me all of 10 minutes to run disk and hookup cords. People talked about the cords snaking through being difficult and that is easy also! It only takes a sec to warm up and get signal for PC. Prints quickly, faxes great. For LESS than the price of one of my old lexmark black ink cartridges I got a new awesome all-in- one! Couldn't be happier.

This fax machine makes YOU do the work. Faxing 1 or multiple pages you will have no problem. But if you are RECEIVING multiple pages YOU will need to do the SORTING. For example, after you receive a 30 page fax, normally the top of the stack would be the cover page, and the next page would be page 1. With this fax machine the cover page from the sender will be at the bottom of the stack, page 1 will be second to the bottom, page 3 will be third from the bottom, and so on... YOU WILL NEED TO SORT THE ENTIRE STACK!!! DON'T BUY, YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED.
