I'm not crazy about the having to have an Adobe ID to use the program. I'd prefer that on start up, the program opens to the main interface.
I use Windows 7, and it works fine so far. The only problem I've had is that the start up splash screen wanted me to verify my AdobeID email (which I thought I had done a long time ago). I clicked send and then it froze and I had to shut it down. It worked the second time though.
As far as video editing programs go, I have a somewhat older version of Pinnacle Studio as well as the Windows Movie Maker.
It's refreshing to have a program that is compatible with Windows 7 (I had to run Pinnacle Studio in compatibility mode).
One of the problems with Windows Movie Maker is that when importing an HD Video, it wouldn't let me import parts of the video. It would start at the begining and import the whole thing. Grr.
In Premiere, when you create a project, you have to select what type of video: HDV 1080i, 720p, DV Standard, Widescreen, etc. That might be confusing if you're not familiar with the options. It'd be great if the program just detected automatically from the source video.
I had to look for a bit to see what setting my camera was using.
I wouldn't say that Premiere is fast when it's creating a project.
The interface is very dark which is supposed to highlight the items you're editing, but it is a little hard to see some options.
After importing a video, an auto-analyzer starts which takes a quite a bit if your video is long. You can turn off some of the analyzing options, which I appreciate to help speed up video imports.
One thing that I like about the software is that it will reduce camera shake and fix other problems such as color issues with the video.
Video playback was not as smooth as other programs I've used. Probably because my computer is a little older, but the other programs played back video just fine.
You can upload video directly to YouTube which is a good feature.
It may be just me, bit it seems like the options should be a little more clear for just creating a simple video file (not a disc). Pinnacle Studio wins as far as ease of use. Premiere has a lot of options, but the usability could be improved.

Every other release, Adobe spews garbage. PE7 was pretty good although sluggish. PE8 is unusable. If it ever does load, it'll crash right in the middle of whatever you're doing, wasting tons of time. If they don't get their act together, I'm going to leave all Adobe products and never look back.

I had PSE 2.0 and it was GREAT! I thought 8 would be even better. After 8 hours of trying to get it to work, still with no success, I can't recommend it.
My computer has plenty of horse power, disk, memory, latest microsoft patches etc etc etc, and it still crashes when trying to open an existing or new project. No human support from Adobe on weekends (which is the only free time I have) and the online help was not useful.
I made a big mistake on this software and it has cost me hours.

This is the first software I have ever returned because it was so bad. I have used Premiere Elements 4 and 7 during the past few years. The only problems were slow rendering and occasional freezing. However, PE8 would not even install properly. I tried it on two different computers and it installed but would not open a new project. Neither would it open a project from PE7. Most disappointing of all were the series of ineffective suggestions from Adobe support, which were cookie-cutter general responses. The last suggestion was to deactivate and reinstall. However, the application has to be OPEN before it can be deactivated and all I have seen is the welcome screen. I have already ordered a Sony product and I hope to have more success with that. I could still use PE7 but I am so annoyed that I don't want to. Save yourself a headache, and don't get PE8.

My daughter is really into taking and editing video, and I suggested that she could use some better quality software. Trusting the Adobe name, I downloaded the trial version of Premier Elements 8. All I can say is that while I rarely give just 1 star to anything, this one deserves it. The introductory "tutorial" information is all marketing -- it doesn't walk you through using the software at all. Performance is extremely sluggish (running on a 2.13 GHz dual-core processor with 2 GB of RAM on XP, well above the minimum requirements). Even though we haven't used the program since this morning, there's still an "Organizer" process hanging around holding about 450 MB of RAM hostage. And now when I tried to restart the program, it's hung. I guess I've got to reboot if I want to use this thing again.
In short, despite the cachet of the Adobe name, this thing is a disaster. I wish I had read the reviews here before I took the time to download and install this thing.
